Classie is a registered bay Arabian
Mare. Her full registered name is Classic Freedom. She is about 15 hands and at
17 years old, she is the eldest of our pets. She is spicy but not bad for an arab. We got
her from a farm in Connecticut when she retired as a brood mare. Her babies were very
valuable.

Taz
is also a registered Arabian Mare but she is grey. Taz is short for Tazandra. She
is about the same size as Classie and she is 11 years old. Her disposition is extremely
good. We got her in October of 1998 after our dear friend Jamie passed away.
Jamie was also a grey arab mare and she lived to be 24.
Belle is our newest
equine arrival. She quickly established herself as
our dominant horse. She is a fifteen year old grey Quarter Horse and she has excellent
breeding. She is very easy going and has already become a favorite with the younger
members of our family. Our twelve year old niece rode her and felt very confident her
first time riding. Our three-year old grandson also rides her and is quite
confident. We have a few more pictures of Belle but they
are a little fuzzy because they were blown up from polaroids.
Skeeter is our
five year old mini-donkey. He adds
a lot of color to our paddock. He constantly nips and
teases the horses, but when they go out for a ride, he brays until they come home.
He chases the local dogs and our cats.
Children flock to feed him carrots even though he would rather chew on
their clothes.
Skeeter has a ball that he'll jump on for hours. His mischief
was
only second to Bleu, our Siberian Husky .

Bleu was our Siberian Husky. He was
named for his ice blue eyes. We got him at the Rehoboth Animal Shelter about in
1999. . He was stunning to look
at with his eyes and perfect silver and black markings. Alas, he looked much better
than he behaved. If we left him alone in the house he would destroy it. If he
got off his
run he'd be on his way to see the world. He had his own pool which he really
enjoyed, but he was continuously pulling out the plug. When our chickens would get too close to him, he
made his own supper. Still, he remained daddy's boy. On one of his jaunts to
freedom Bleu was struck by a car.
Bear (Baron) is another rescue. He is part Chow and
part Golden Retriever. He is very quiet and is satisfied to just lay around and look
pretty. He is about 3 years old. Bear and Bleu roughhoused all night long keeping us awake.
Bear still keeps up the tradition of jumping on the bed to rustle us when the
alarm goes off.
Mugs was the grand mammy of all our
dogs. This didn't stop her from being mommy's
baby. Mugs is a Chinese Pug and had four litters with our mutt Dobie who passed away
in the summer of 1998 at 17. One of her puppies was on the front page of the Fall River Gazette as
an entry into the "Ugly Dog Contest". We don't know how he fared, but with his
mother's pushed in snout and his father's long exposed teeth, we figure he was a shoe-in.
Cleo was found by the railroad
tracks as a kitten. We think she is a Maine Coon Cat because of her markings and size
(she's HUGE). She is very friendly and seeks attention like a dog. Occasionally she joins
us on the bed for a night's sleep.
She's a good hunter and does a good job ensuring that we don't have any
rodents around our grain bins.

Shylo only comes in to eat and sleep.
He spends his days hiding in the flowers under our bird feeder. He was named Shylo because
he is so skittish. I once saw him running full tilt across our yard with a chicken
right on his tail. I'm happy to say he won the race and lived to stray another day. We got
him at the local pet supply store.
 This
cute little lady was named Springer. She was named for her bouncing playfulness. We found her in our kitchen
helping herself to the food we had put down for Shylo and Cleo. She just never left.
Unfortunately, Springer had feline lieukemia and had to be put to sleep soon
after she was spayed.

This is our grandson,
Christopher, with two of the five
four three chickens that we had. (Bleu had a couple of chicken dinners). The
Easter Bunny left us the "chicks" one Easter. They were soon evicted from their
box in our small and poorly ventilated computer room. They moved to a new coop
out in our yard before they were finally given to a neighbor. Although Bleu
enjoyed having them around, the chickens weren't too thrilled about it.

Why not check the Rehoboth Animal Shelter to see what pets
are available for adoption. Call the Animal Control
Officer (Jane Foster) at (508) 252-5421. Did
you know that the Rehoboth Animal Shelter offers Rabies clinics ? And... did you know that
it is only $5 to adopt a neutered/spayed pet. Pets that are not fixed are $35 but they
will they will repay $30 if you spay or neuter it. |
